COPAS hosts maiden edition of Workshop Series

On January 23rd 2024, the College of Pure and Applied Sciences (COPAS) organized the maiden edition of a workshop series titled, “Nanotechnology in the New Era.”

The workshop series is a manifestation of the commitment of the college to nurturing scientific curiosity, fostering innovation, and advancing knowledge in the realms of pure and applied sciences.  With the calibre of the speakers at the workshop, this motive and commitment were fully displayed in their topics and speech delivery.

Prof. Joseph Olakunle Coker, the first speaker, spoke on nanotechnology and future innovations in the country. He discussed how nanotechnology could help electricity supply, energy storage and distribution, thereby creating more job opportunities. He further opened up research areas that students could focus on, in this field of nanotechnology.

He concluded his speech by challenging everyone present to consider the field of nanotechnology for research purposes. He further appealed to the government to provide funds for research in the field of nanotechnology and provide an enabling environment for the adaptation of technology in Nigeria.

Professor Joseph Olakunle Coker, President, Nigerian Institute of Physics

The second speaker, Professor Bamidele Iwalokun, spoke on nanotechnology and drug delivery. He described nanotechnology as one that cuts across all areas of life and is available to be harnessed for various useful products. These products can be used in treating various ailments, including brain cancer, and other cancerous cells.

He continued further to mention fields such as nanomedicine, nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticles, and others, validating nanoparticles in research. He concluded that there are recent advances in the field of nanotechnology for drug delivery, which could be further studied.
