The Caleb University Colloquium 2024/2025, which kicked off today, Wednesday, September 11, and continues through tomorrow, Thursday, September 12, is set to be a pivotal event in advancing the institution’s academic excellence and global relevance.

The colloquium features key speeches and interactive sessions involving principal officers and staff members of Caleb University. Attendees have engaged in break-out sessions led by deans, focusing on identifying and addressing academic and operational gaps.

In his welcome address, Vice Chancellor Professor Nosa Owens-Ibie emphasized the importance of integrity and commitment in academic roles. He urged faculty and staff to eschew unethical practices, including student extortion and inappropriate relationships, and instead strive to become valuable assets to the university. He underscored that the university’s success is contingent on the collective effort and record of service of its members.

Keynote speakers for the event included Professor Peter Okebukola, former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), and Rachel Harvey, Global Engagement Officer at Lancaster University, UK.

Professor Okebukola advocated for a diverse and inclusive student body, proposing that Caleb University establish a task force to develop a five-year strategic plan. This plan aims to elevate the university’s ranking to among the top three in Nigeria and top 100 in Africa by 2030. He suggested regular progress reviews to keep the Senate, Council, and Visitor informed.

Rachel Harvey provided insights on improving Caleb University’s global rankings and relevance. She highlighted the importance of showcasing research outcomes, funding achievements, and alumni success.

Harvey emphasized the need for a robust online presence through podcasts, blogs, social media, and newsletters to share these accomplishments. She also stressed the value of sustainability and encouraged the university to adopt a “show and not just tell” approach in demonstrating its initiatives and successes.

Harvey shared Lancaster University’s strategies, including hosting stakeholder events, engaging with industry figures, and providing support to small businesses. She recommended that Caleb University leverage its data to highlight the profiles and expertise of its principal officers, thereby attracting key individuals and enhancing its global profile.

The final lecture, delivered by Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics Professor Sunday Adewale, focused on reengineering academic processes to foster global excellence. Professor Adewale discussed potential reforms and strategies to improve the university’s international standing.

The Colloquium 2024/2025 at Caleb University is set to be a transformative event, with discussions and strategies aimed at positioning the institution as a leader in global higher education.
