Abuja-based Brekete Family, a Human Rights Radio and Television station, has temporarily suspended broadcasts in protest against the detention of minors following their involvement in the #EndBadGovernance protest. The partial shutdown was confirmed in an official statement posted on X on Monday.
The station emphasized its commitment to advocating for vulnerable groups, stating, “Human Rights Radio and Television (Brekete Family) shuts down partially in protest of the Nigerian government’s detention of underage children.” It urged Nigerians and international bodies to demand the release of the detained minors.
Ahmed Isah, the station’s owner, voiced his frustration on air, expressing dismay over the children’s condition after they were arraigned in court last Friday. He directed the station to halt broadcasts as a show of solidarity, with plans to remain off-air until Wednesday, when it will resume to gather public opinion on the issue.
The arrest of 76 individuals, including 32 minors, has led to public outrage and pressure on President Tinubu’s administration. Online reactions were mixed, with some supporting the station’s stance, while others suggested continued broadcasting as a means to amplify the cause.
