Bokkos Under Siege: Gunmen Kill Pastor, Seven Villagers in Twin Attacks

Written by on May 28, 2025

At least eight individuals, including a pastor, have been killed in a resurgence of violent attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. The assaults, which unfolded over a two-day period, have reignited tensions in the region and triggered a wave of displacement among residents.

The violence began late Sunday night when armed assailants stormed the residence of Pastor Mimang Lekyil of COCIN LCC Kwakas-Mushere, fatally shooting him inside the pastorium. His wife sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is currently receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

The initial attack sparked retaliation by enraged local youths, who reportedly set ablaze several Fulani structures in the area on Monday. Security forces swiftly intervened to de-escalate the growing unrest.

However, despite the temporary calm, armed militants suspected to be herders launched a second attack later that evening, targeting the nearby Mbor community in Mushere district. The assault left seven villagers dead before security personnel could respond.

The continued violence has forced women and children to flee surrounding settlements, including Kopmur, in search of safety. Local community leaders have voiced alarm over the insufficient security presence, calling for urgent intervention to restore peace and stability.

In response, the state’s Police Commissioner has deployed additional security operatives to the affected communities, with assurances that efforts are underway to prevent further bloodshed and maintain order.
