Anambra SUBEB Chair Refutes Allegations of Involvement in N6.7bn Contract Scam

Written by on March 13, 2024

Associate Prof. Vera Nwadinobi, the Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), has vehemently denied any connection to an alleged N6.7 billion UBEC contract scam currently under investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Reports circulating on social media platforms have implicated Nwadinobi in the purported scam, alleging misappropriation of procurement funds designated for UBEC projects in Anambra from 2019 to 2021. However, Nwadinobi dismissed these claims as “false and fabricated,” attributing them to detractors opposed to the “disruptive change” underway in Anambra.

The reports suggest that the funds in question were unlawfully distributed among the ASUBEB chairman, government officials, and their associates. Investigations revealed irregularities in the awarding of UBEC contracts during the specified period, with contracts allegedly granted to individuals who did not participate in the board’s technical bidding process.

A source within ASUBEB confirmed that officials implicated in the scandal have been summoned by the ICPC to account for their alleged involvement. Furthermore, the ASUBEB notice board, displaying the list of “qualified bidders,” was reportedly replaced amid the ongoing investigations.

The reports also indicated the appointment of a new Procurement head at ASUBEB, allegedly involved in signing contract award letters for projects he did not supervise nor participate in the procurement process.

In response to inquiries, Nwadinobi dismissed the allegations as fabricated lies, emphasizing her commitment to the state’s anti-corruption efforts and the administration’s agenda for positive change.

Meanwhile, the ICPC spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, declined to disclose details of the ongoing investigation, citing the agency’s policy of confidentiality during such proceedings.

As investigations continue, the allegations against Nwadinobi underscore the need for thorough scrutiny and accountability in public procurement processes, ensuring transparency and integrity in government operations.
