Lagos Court Ruling: VeryDarkMan Ordered to Remove Defamatory Content About Femi Falana and Son

In a significant legal victory, the Lagos State High Court has mandated controversial social media commentator Martin Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, to eliminate defamatory comments and videos regarding esteemed lawyer and human rights activist Femi Falana (SAN) and his son, Folarin.
The ruling was issued by Justice M. O. Dawodu on Tuesday in case number ID/8584/GCM/2024. The court determined that VeryDarkMan’s social media posts from September 24, 2024, which attempted to link the well-known figure Bobrisky to Falz and his father, were both defamatory and damaging to their public image.
Justice Dawodu stated, “According to the applicants (Falz and Falana), the defendant (VeryDarkMan) knew these statements (Bobrisky’s claims) were false and untrue but proceeded to publish them to injure their reputation. Furthermore, the defamatory statements are still trending on the defendant’s several online platforms, and the injury to their reputation continues as long as the publication remains online.”
This ruling underscores the increasing scrutiny of social media discourse and the legal repercussions that can arise from unverified claims, highlighting the delicate balance between freedom of expression and the right to protect one’s reputation in the digital age.
