UK to establish $5m lithium battery recycling facility in Ogun

Written by on September 19, 2024

Adrian Clews, CEO of Hinckley E-Waste Recycling Ltd, revealed on Wednesday that Nigeria, trailing only South Africa, is the second-largest producer of electronic waste in Africa. The country generates over 200,000 metric tonnes of e-waste annually, posing significant environmental and health risks.

At a press briefing in Abeokuta, Clews announced plans to establish a $5 million Lithium-ion and lead-acid battery recycling plant in Ogun State, supported by Manufacturing Africa, a UK government initiative. The plant aims to transform toxic waste into a profitable venture, creating over 100 jobs.

Ogun State officials praised the initiative, highlighting the state’s leadership in recycling, particularly plastics, metals, and paper, and reaffirmed support for the project. British High Commissioner Richard Montgomery emphasized the UK’s commitment to investing in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
