Bala Mohammed Dismisses Wike’s Threat: ‘Nobody Can Set Bauchi on Fire’

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has responded to a recent threat by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, aimed at states controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wike had warned PDP governors against interfering in his ongoing feud with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, vowing to “ignite crises” in their states if they did.
In a firm rebuttal on Tuesday, Mohammed, who also chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, stated, “Nobody can put fire in Bauchi. We have volumes of water.” His remarks were directed at Wike, emphasizing that while their disagreement may have been the source of irritation, it was not personal.
Mohammed’s comments followed a visit from the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to Bauchi, during which the party’s internal unity and leadership were discussed. The PDP Governors’ Forum had earlier criticized the recent ward and local government congresses in Rivers State, which saw Wike take control of the party’s structure over the sitting governor, Fubara. This sparked Wike’s fiery warning during a state congress in Port Harcourt, where he asserted his dominance within the state’s PDP affairs.
Despite the exchange, Mohammed downplayed the threat, reaffirming his commitment to maintaining stability in Bauchi and expressing confidence in the PDP’s ability to navigate its internal challenges. He praised the NWC for its efforts to ensure party unity, describing the visit as a show of solidarity and leadership.
Meanwhile, a pressure group within the Osun State chapter of the PDP, “Professionals in PDP,” has called on party governors and the NWC to take action against Wike for his recent outbursts. The group criticized Wike’s behavior, questioning why he seems to operate above party discipline, and urged the party’s leadership to hold him accountable.
The group’s statement read: “The recent display of arrogance and uninformed outburst of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, is not only shameless but demeaning and unbecoming of a supposed leader.”
As tensions continue to simmer, the PDP’s leadership faces increasing pressure to address the divisions within its ranks.
