Anthony Joshua Reflects on Career Struggles Ahead of Dubois Title Fight

Written by on September 18, 2024

Ahead of his IBF world heavyweight title fight against Daniel Dubois at Wembley on Saturday, Anthony Joshua has opened up to BBC about the struggles he’s faced in his boxing career. The 34-year-old is aiming to reclaim a world title for the first time since his initial defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in September 2021. Reflecting on his journey, he spoke about the emotional toll of trying to return to the top, especially after another loss to Usyk in August 2022.

“I’ve worked hard and been through a lot of pain,” Joshua said. “Hopefully, those experiences won’t happen again because, as you saw that night [after the second Usyk loss], I don’t like losing.”

Since his 2022 defeat, Joshua has rebuilt his career with victories over Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius, Otto Wallin, and most recently, a knockout win against former UFC champion Francis Ngannou.

“I think I’m gifted with an ability to fight and compete,” Joshua explained, adding that he’s focused on sharpening his skills over the last several months.

Joshua’s showdown with Dubois will take place in front of 96,000 fans at Wembley, with the winner likely set to challenge either Tyson Fury or Usyk after their December rematch.
