The federal government has intensified efforts to convert vehicles from petrol and diesel to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) with the distribution of 1,200 conversion kits to five states. The Director/CEO of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi, revealed in Abuja that this move aims to reduce the country’s dependence on petrol and diesel.
Oluwagbemi highlighted that Nigeria spends between $6-8 billion annually on fuel subsidies, much of which is borrowed. The government plans to convert at least 18,000 vehicles to CNG by year-end, with 250,000 more kits expected by Q1 2025. The number of conversion centers has also expanded, now exceeding 130 across the country, with a target of 250 by the end of the year.
