IGP Condemns Violence in Rivers State, Orders Thorough Investigation

Written by on June 19, 2024

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the outbreak of violence and lawlessness at various Local Government Council secretariats in Rivers State. The clashes, sparked by disputes over the tenure of Local Government Council Chairmen, resulted in the tragic deaths of a police officer and a vigilante member.

In response to these appalling acts, the IGP has directed the Rivers Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to enhance security measures across the state and initiate thorough investigations into the killings and the general violence. The deceased police officer, Inspector David Mgbada, and the vigilante member, Samuel Nwigwe, lost their lives in the clash at Eberi-Omuma in Omuma LGA.

To apprehend the perpetrators, the IGP has deployed operatives of the Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to assist the Rivers State Command. He sternly warned individuals and groups engaged in senseless attacks and killings of security operatives to desist immediately, emphasizing that the law will be enforced to the fullest extent against them.

The IGP also instructed the CP to intensify patrols, strategically deploy officers, and enhance intelligence operations to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of all residents. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased security operatives, acknowledging their dedication and sacrifice in the line of duty.

While urging restraint and peaceful conflict resolution, the IGP called on all residents and political stakeholders in Rivers State to seek peaceful means of resolving differences. The statement underscores the commitment of the police to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens.
