Peter Obi Open to PDP-LP Merger, Emphasizes Nigeria’s Well-being

Written by on May 27, 2024

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has addressed the possibility of a merger between the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In an interview on NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV released on YouTube, Obi also responded to the prospect of being supported as a Southeast candidate in the 2027 presidential election by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 flagbearer.

Expressing gratitude for Abubakar’s statement about potentially supporting him as a Southeast candidate, Obi commended him and stated, “I’m not desperate to be president, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential.”

Regarding the potential merger between the PDP and LP, Obi expressed openness to the idea, but with a caveat. He emphasized that his interest lies in governance and unlocking Nigeria’s potential for the benefit of its citizens. “If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly… I’m for it,” he stated. However, Obi made it clear that he is not interested in mergers solely for the sake of securing power or winning elections.

Reflecting on the importance of unity and cooperation, Obi stressed that any collaboration must be aimed at building a better Nigeria. He asserted, “If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it, I don’t want to be part of anything like that.”

In conclusion, Obi emphasized the necessity for unity at various levels to contribute to Nigeria’s progress. Whether at the party or individual level, he believes that unity should serve the collective goal of building a prosperous nation.
