Federal High Court Grants Abba Kyari Two-Week Bail for Mother’s Burial

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja has granted temporary bail to former Commander of the Force Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, for a period of two weeks on compassionate grounds, allowing him to bury his mother.
Kyari was granted bail in the sum of 50 million Naira, with a surety required to provide a similar amount. The surety, who is to serve as Kyari’s counsel in the case, must also deposit a copy of their call-to-bar certificate with the deputy registrar of the court.
As part of the bail conditions, Kyari must surrender his travel passport to the court and regularly report to any National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) formation nearest to him during the period of bail.
Justice Nwite issued the temporary bail order pending the ruling on Kyari’s bail application scheduled for May 31, 2024. While Kyari’s mother, Yachilla Kyari, passed away on May 5, 2024, it remains unclear whether this fact influenced the decision to grant bail.
Abba Kyari faced scrutiny in 2021 after being indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with alleged international Internet fraud involving Ramon Abbas, also known as Hushpuppi. Subsequently, Kyari was arrested by the NDLEA in February 2020 on charges related to drug offenses and has since been held in Kuje prison, Abuja.
