Nigerian Military School Alumni Seek Special Admission Privileges at Nigerian Defence Academy: Legislator Backs Motion

Written by on May 16, 2024

The lawmaker representing Birin-Kebbi/Kalgo/Bunza Federal Constituency, Ibrahim Mohammed, has expressed support for a motion advocating special admission privileges for graduates of Nigerian Military Schools (NMS) into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

Mohammed emphasized that while advocating for preferential treatment, merit-based admission processes would not be compromised. He clarified during a Wednesday plenary session that the proposed privileges for NMS alumni wouldn’t override the merit-based admission standards of the NDA.

The bill for a Special Admission Quota at the Nigerian Defence Academy for NMS graduates was introduced by Emeka Godwin during the session and has been forwarded to the relevant committee for further consideration.

During the session, Mohammed highlighted the importance of continuity from military secondary education to military higher education at the NDA, asserting, “Students from Nigerian Military Schools need to enjoy some privileges in gaining access to the NDA.”

He further explained, “This motion does not really remove the issue of merit because you look at the prayers (in the bill) – it says, ‘By allocating 50 per cent slot to each applicants pending the presentation and passage to the Nigerian Defence Amendment Bill.’ Therefore, this motion still falls back to requirements of entry into the NDA.”

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu welcomed Mohammed as the youngest lawmaker and commended his initiative on his birthday anniversary, coinciding with the session.

The Nigerian Military School, established on May 20, 1954, aims to consolidate academic and military excellence towards building future Nigerian leaders. Conversely, the Nigerian Defence Academy, established on February 5, 1964, focuses on producing officers with comprehensive training in military and academic subjects to serve as a foundation for the development of officers in the Nigerian Armed Forces.
