Oyo State Government made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing the apprehension of 32 illegal miners, including two Chinese nationals, for their involvement in unlawful mining activities at Sooro market in Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area.
Colonel James Oladipo Ajibola, the Director-General of Operation Burst, disclosed this following a crucial security stakeholders’ meeting convened at the Deputy Governor’s Office, Agodi in Ibadan.
The clampdown on illegal mining activities came after the state Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, ordered the closure of the market during a clearance operation on Sunday. Lawal also directed the immediate evacuation of all illegal structures and shanties erected within the market premises and surrounding areas where precious stones were being mined.
Ajibola attributed the success of the operation to the collaborative efforts of traditional leaders and the joint security task force, which swiftly restored peace and order in the region.
Earlier, the State Government had announced the temporary closure of the market due to the rampant activities of illegal miners.
Retired CP Sunday Odukoya, the Executive Assistant to the State Governor on Security, cautioned against any involvement in illegal mining activities, emphasizing the government’s readiness to take firm action against offenders.
Addressing the press, Odukoya reiterated the government’s stance on maintaining law and order in Oke-Ogun, particularly in Sooro, Irepo Local Government. He underscored the commitment of the traditional ruler, Iba of Kishi, Oba Mashoud Lawal, to ensure the eradication of criminal activities in the area.
“The government is resolute in ensuring peace in the region, and the market will remain closed until further directives are issued by the State Governor, Seyi Makinde,” he concluded.
