Tragedy struck on Friday night as a petrol-laden tanker, carrying 33,000 liters of fuel, erupted in flames, claiming the lives of two individuals. The incident occurred at the Ijesha end of the Cele Link Bridge in Surulere, Lagos.
According to Adeseye, emergency services received a distress call at approximately 23:12hrs, alerting them to a tanker truck carrying 33,000 liters of petrol losing control while navigating the roundabout to ascend the bridge. The spillage ignited into a large fire, engulfing the surrounding area.
Firefighters from the Isolo and Bolade Fire Stations swiftly contained the inferno, preventing further escalation. Unfortunately, two male individuals were discovered deceased, their bodies tragically burnt beyond recognition and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for necessary procedures. The Lagos State Ambulance Service also provided vital assistance throughout the operation.
Efforts are underway to clear the wreckage of the involved vehicles from the road to ensure free flow of traffic and enable investigative procedures. This incident follows a similar one reported in April, where five people were confirmed dead and over 70 cars burnt in a tanker explosion at the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State.
