Residents and traders in the bustling Ojoo market of Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State, were thrown into panic as the state government commenced the demolition of numerous shops and kiosks, earlier today.
According to reliable sources, the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development had previously issued quit notices to the traders, which were largely ignored, leading to the recent demolition spree.
Muhdeen Ganiyu, also known as Elewedu, the Chairman of the market, expressed concern over the short notice given to vacate the premises but assured that executive members of the affected markets would convene to address the situation. He stated, “The quit notice was too short. All executive members of all the affected markets will soon meet. So, I cannot say anything for now.”

Confirming the demolition, Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, highlighted the safety concerns prompting the action. He mentioned Governor Seyi Makinde’s personal visit to address the affected individuals and assured them of alternative arrangements, stating, “The government will provide another place. That place is dangerous. And the new place is not far. Just at the front of the Barracks.”
The government’s action has sparked concerns and reactions from residents and traders alike.
