David Akanmu, the distinguished best-graduating student of the University of Lagos in 2024, has been honoured with the esteemed 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholarship at Stanford University.
Announced on Tuesday by the Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University, Akanmu stands out as one of only five Africans, and notably the sole representative from an African-based tertiary institution, to be chosen for the 2024 cohort. This cohort, marking the seventh and most extensive selection since the inception of the award, comprises 90 scholars from 30 different countries, with Akanmu being the shining example from UNILAG.

Highlighting the global significance of this achievement, UNILAG emerges as the sole African university among the 60 institutions worldwide from which the 2024 cohort of 90 new scholars was drawn.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the future, Stanford University’s president emeritus and the Shriram Family Director of Knight-Hennessy Scholars, John L. Hennessy, remarked, “With each new cohort of scholars, I am even more encouraged about the future. The challenges our world faces are only growing more complex, which validates the importance of our mission here.”
Akanmu’s exceptional academic prowess and leadership qualities have earned him this remarkable opportunity. Graduating with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 in Civil Engineering at UNILAG’s Convocation Ceremonies in January 2024, Akanmu is the third graduate of the institution to receive the prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholar Award.
Set to pursue a Ph.D. in Energy Science and Engineering at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, Akanmu’s journey exemplifies UNILAG’s commitment to fostering excellence and global leadership.
In acknowledging Akanmu’s achievement, UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the University Senate and community, emphasizing the significance of Akanmu’s scholarship in shaping the future of global leadership and innovation.
