Two fatalities and 21 injuries were reported following a stabbing incident at a hospital in southwest China on Tuesday 7th May 2024 , as stated by local authorities.
According to an announcement on the county’s official WeChat account, the Chengnan Hospital in Zhenxiong County was the site of the knife attack, resulting in the casualties.
The suspect, identified as a resident of a nearby village, is currently under investigation by the authorities.
The injured individuals are receiving medical treatment at the hospital, the statement confirmed.
State-run news site The Paper shared images illustrating the incident, showing a man brandishing a knife confronting another individual wielding a stick in the hospital lobby, as well as police officers arriving at the scene.
While mass violent incidents are uncommon in China due to strict firearm regulations, there has been a series of stabbing incidents in recent years.
In August of the previous year, a man with a history of mental illness attacked and killed two individuals, injuring seven others in Yunnan.
Similarly, the month prior, six people lost their lives, and one was injured in a stabbing incident at a kindergarten in Guangdong province.
In August 2022, a knife attack at a kindergarten in Jiangxi province resulted in three fatalities and six injuries.
