President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is gearing up to mark its first anniversary with a groundbreaking initiative set to revolutionize Nigeria’s transportation sector. Ahead of May 29, the administration is poised to roll out the first batch of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, comprising buses and tricycles, as part of its commitment to transitioning away from fuel subsidies.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Presidential spokesman, the unveiling of 2700 CNG buses and tricycles nationwide marks a significant step towards fulfilling Tinubu’s pledge to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal. This move comes as part of a larger provision of N100 billion in the N500 billion palliative budget allocated to procure 5,500 CNG vehicles and 20,000 conversion kits.
“Onanuga revealed that the private sector has already committed over $50 million in investments towards CNG refuelling stations, conversion centres, and mother stations across the country,” highlighting the collaborative efforts driving this transformative initiative.
With the support of tax and duty waivers approved by President Tinubu, these investments have paved the way for tangible progress. “From the end of May, Nigeria will take some baby steps to join such nations that already have large fleets of CNG vehicles,” Onanuga remarked, underlining the imminent shift towards sustainable transportation solutions.
The implementation plan includes the production of over 600 buses in the first phase alone, with a new assembly plant on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway poised to play a pivotal role. Additionally, partnerships with Chinese manufacturers and local suppliers underscore the administration’s commitment to bolstering domestic capacity and job creation.
Furthermore, private-sector collaboration is key to ensuring the success of this initiative. NIPCO and BOVAS are spearheading efforts to provide refilling services and conversion centres, with plans for nationwide expansion. NNPC Limited is also set to join the initiative, signalling a unified approach towards advancing CNG adoption across the country.
