Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Assures Intervention on Electricity Tariff Hike, Addresses Constitutional Reform

Written by on April 8, 2024

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has pledged the parliament’s intervention to address the recent surge in electricity tariffs imposed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The House is set to deliberate on this pressing issue when it reconvenes on April 23, 2024.

The recent electricity tariff hike, which has led to up to a 300% increase for consumers in Band A, has sparked widespread criticism from opposition parties, prominent citizens, and civil society organizations. The abrupt announcement of the tariff hike by electricity authorities has heightened fears of exacerbating economic hardships for Nigerians.

Speaking on a special edition of “Ben Kalu’s Mandate,” a call-in radio programme on FLO FM, Umuahia, Abia State, Deputy Speaker Kalu assured Nigerians that the parliament would prioritize finding a balanced solution to the electricity tariff issue. He emphasized the need to consider both the welfare of Nigerians and the interests of investors in the energy sector.

Deputy Speaker Kalu stated, “We cannot suffocate the investors, and at the same time, we cannot allow Nigerians to suffer unduly. When we resume, addressing the electricity tariff hike will be one of our top priorities. We will examine both sides of the coin to devise a win-win approach to resolve this issue.”

Responding to calls for a new constitution, Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized the importance of public participation in shaping the future of Nigeria’s governance system. He encouraged citizens to voice their opinions and contribute to discussions on constitutional amendments during upcoming public hearings across various zones and local government areas.
