Nigerian Engineer Invents Smart Cancer-Detecting Bra
Written by Deborah Oyinloye on March 27, 2024
Nigerian embedded systems and robotics engineer, Kemisola Bolarinwa has invented a smart bra that can diagnose breast cancer in its early stages before symptoms appear. Bolarinwa brought this invention to the world in February 2022, designing the prototype of the smart bra. The death of a relative in 2017 prompted this. She said that before her aunt’s death, she rarely paid attention to breast cancer. That’s because that’s just what she heard on TV or the radio.
Bolarinwa is the founder and CEO of Nextwear Technologies, Nigeria’s first wearable technology startup. She said she was motivated to invent the smart bra after frequent visits to the hospital where her aunt was before her death. She said watching other women battle breast cancer was painful. After that, she increased her efforts for this invention, which was recognized by BBC Africa.
Bolarinwa added that she spent a year and a half doing thorough research before the smart bra launched in 2019. To detect bumps in the breasts, the smart bra uses ultrasound technology in a small form factor. This initiative involves shrinking ultrasound equipment into a portable size that makes it wearable. According to Bolarinwa, this is possible thanks to nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology is a branch of science, technology and engineering concerned with the manufacturing of tech in small sizes. To understand more fully, the smart bra uses a specialized ultrasound system called Doppler. The system uses high-frequency sound waves to bounce off the body, detecting abnormalities such as blood clots, heart defects and blocked arteries. It works differently from traditional ultrasound devices that create images of the scanned area using sound waves.
Bolarinwa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering from Ado-Ekiti University (now Ekiti State University). She has over 10 years of experience, exceptional technical skills and strong problem-solving skills. She is passionate about solving complex problems and staying up to date with the latest technologies.
She is an inventor, innovator, entrepreneur and president of the Women In ICT Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on technology, leadership and business for women and girls to address the issue of under-representation of women in leadership, policy-making, and math-intensive fields of science and technology.
