Niger Republic Reopens Konni Border Following Nigeria’s Lead

Written by on March 23, 2024

In a significant move towards fostering regional cooperation and trade, the government of Niger Republic has reopened its Konni land border for operations. This decision closely follows the recent reopening of the Illela land border by the Nigeria Customs Service.

Nuhu Samaila, a resident of Konni, Niger Republic, confirmed the reopening of the border, which took effect precisely at 12 pm on Friday. He expressed appreciation for the decision made by the country’s military junta, stating, “It is commendable that the government has responded to the people’s demands by reopening the border.”

Samaila further highlighted the potential economic benefits of this border reopening, emphasizing its role in boosting trade activities between Nigeria and Niger Republic. “This move will undoubtedly contribute to the economic growth of both countries,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, last week, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria directed the reopening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with Niger Republic. This decision was part of efforts to restore normalcy and strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations. The restoration of electricity supply to the Niger Republic by Nigeria’s government also underscores the renewed commitment to enhance regional collaboration.

In August of the previous year, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), under Tinubu’s leadership, had imposed sanctions on Niger following a coup that ousted President-elect Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. The arrest and subsequent detention of Bazoum by the Niger Presidential Guard were declared illegal by ECOWAS leaders, who demanded the reinstatement of constitutional order in Niger.

In line with the presidential directive to reopen the border, the Controller of Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi State command, Iheanacho Ojike, reopened the Kamba land border. Ojike emphasized the strategic importance of the Kamba border, noting its significant contribution to revenue generation in Kebbi State.
