Tinubu Implements Three-Month Ban on Public-Funded Foreign Trips for Government Officials
Written by Deborah Oyinloye on March 21, 2024
President Bola Tinubu has enforced a three-month ban on public-funded foreign trips for ministers, heads of agencies, and other government officials, effective from April 1, 2024. The decision aims to address rising travel expenses and ensure focused service delivery amidst economic challenges.
The ban, communicated through a letter signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, underscores Tinubu’s concerns about the growing costs of travel borne by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). It emphasizes the need for responsible fiscal management and efficient allocation of resources.
In January, Tinubu had already initiated measures to streamline delegation sizes for both local and foreign trips, limiting the number of accompanying officials. This move followed criticism over the large Nigerian delegation at the twenty-eighth Conference of Parties (COP28) in the United Arab Emirates.
The letter highlights Tinubu’s directive to seek presidential approval at least two weeks prior to any public-funded international trip, emphasizing the necessity of such journeys. This measure aims to ensure accountability and prudent utilization of public funds.
Furthermore, the ban reflects Tinubu’s commitment to cost reduction in governance without compromising government functions. It underscores the importance of prioritizing mandates and enhancing service delivery amidst economic challenges.
As part of the temporary measure, the ban on public-funded international trips is expected to foster fiscal responsibility and promote efficient resource management across government agencies. Tinubu’s directive signifies a proactive approach to address financial constraints while maintaining essential government operations.
Government officials are urged to comply with the directive and seek presidential approval for any international trips deemed necessary. This approach aligns with Tinubu’s vision for responsible governance and prudent financial management in Nigeria.
