Global audio streaming leader Spotify has unveiled plans to incorporate music videos into its platform, marking its entry into a domain long dominated by YouTube. The company announced the beta rollout of music videos, featuring a curated selection of hits from renowned artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, and Ice Spice, alongside local favourites.
Initially, this feature will be accessible to paying subscribers in select markets including the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. Spotify’s move comes as it boasts over 600 million monthly users, with 236 million subscribers, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Google’s YouTube, which has traditionally been synonymous with music video streaming.
YouTube has historically held a stronghold on music video content online, with iconic hits like Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” and Psy’s “Gangnam Style” amassing billions of views. However, Spotify’s foray into music videos underscores its commitment to diversifying its offerings beyond audio content, as evidenced by its recent ventures into podcasts and exclusive content.
With this strategic move, Spotify aims to further solidify its position in the streaming landscape and cater to the evolving preferences of its vast user base, enhancing the overall user experience and engagement on its platform.
