Osun Courts Back in Session: JUSUN Strike Ends After Three Months
Written by Deborah Oyinloye on March 11, 2024
Following the suspension of the three-month strike by the Osun chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), judiciary staff in Osun have resumed work. The strike, initiated in November 2023, aimed to address issues concerning better conditions of service and other demands.
A visit to the High Court Complex on the Osogbo-Ilobu Road revealed a flurry of activities, with workers entering the court complex early in compliance with the directive to resume on March 7. Artisans were seen tidying up the premises, while lawyers and litigants expressed relief at the reopening of courtrooms.
While court sessions were not held on the first day of resumption due to necessary cleaning and preparations, staff members expressed gratitude to the union for championing their cause. They emphasized the importance of fully implementing the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the union, Osun judiciary, and the state government.
Administrative officer, Mrs Juliet Alabi urged the speedy implementation of the MoU, emphasizing its significance for all judiciary workers in the state. Lawyer Mr Jones Olujimi highlighted the positive impact of the strike’s suspension, as courtrooms are now open for fresh and pending cases.
The strike, initiated over alleged issues such as the seizure of wardrobe allowances and the suspension of colleagues, was suspended following a tripartite agreement between the Osun government, the Osun judiciary management, and JUSUN. The agreement stipulates the conveyance of a meeting by the Judiciary Service Commission within seven days of the strike’s suspension to address other union demands.
JUSUN Chairman, Mr Oluwagbenga Eludire expressed appreciation for the intervention of Governor Ademola Adeleke and Speaker Wale Egbedun, acknowledging their role in resolving the strike.
As court activities resume, stakeholders anticipate the fulfilment of the terms of the MoU and the smooth functioning of the judiciary in Osun State.
