Sheikh Daurawa Resigns from Hisbah Leadership in Kano, Citing Frustration

Written by on March 1, 2024

Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, the Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, has stepped down from his position, citing frustration with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s management.

The unexpected resignation was revealed by Sheikh Daurawa himself via his social media account today, Friday, March 1st, 2024.

Expressing his disappointment, Daurawa highlighted his efforts to uphold societal morality during his tenure at Hisbah, despite facing obstacles from the governor.

The announcement coincided with Sheikh Daurawa’s involvement in a legislative retreat organized by the Kano State House of Assembly, which focused on proposing a law mandating pre-marital medical check-ups for couples.

Apologizing to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the sudden departure, Daurawa reiterated his commitment to his responsibilities. He stated, “I’ve actively engaged with various stakeholders to promote moral values, including Kannywood and TikTok celebrities. However, I’ve encountered discouraging comments despite our efforts at Hisbah.”

Governor Yusuf had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation of Hisbah’s “operation kau da badala” across the state. This initiative aims to combat immorality and enforce Islamic values.

During a meeting with Imams at Kano Government House, the governor criticized the methods employed by Hisbah, particularly citing a video depicting the harsh treatment of individuals by Hisbah officials. He emphasized the need for a more compassionate approach in line with Islamic principles.

In his address, Governor Yusuf stated, “We establish agencies like Hisbah to guide our youth towards righteousness. However, if their actions are contrary to this, it may lead to disobedience among the youth.”

The resignation of Sheikh Daurawa marks a significant development in Kano’s religious and governance landscape, highlighting tensions between Hisbah’s enforcement methods and the governor’s vision for moral governance.
