ASUU Urges Members to Prioritize Systemic Issues Over Salary Demands

Written by on February 22, 2024

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has cautioned its members against solely focusing on salary and welfare demands, urging them to prioritize the broader issues affecting the education system. The union’s president emphasized this during a workshop aimed at fostering awareness among members.

ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke underscored the importance of understanding the union’s objectives beyond individual welfare concerns. He highlighted the need for actions like strikes to be driven by considerations for the overall improvement of university education, funding, and national development.

Osodeke cautioned against the pitfalls of unions fixating solely on salary and welfare matters, citing examples of past instances where such focus led to the collapse of institutions and loss of jobs for union members. He urged members to advocate for systemic reforms that would safeguard the integrity and sustainability of educational institutions.

Addressing the issue of salary arrears, Osodeke revealed that the federal government still owed ASUU members seven and a half months’ salaries. He called for transparent dialogue and concrete timelines for payment arrangements to prevent future strikes.

Meanwhile, ASUU’s Kano zone urged President Bola Tinubu to expedite the review and signing of renegotiated agreements to avert potential industrial crises. The zone also called on governments, both federal and state, to address outstanding issues in previous agreements to maintain industrial harmony.

Concerns over university autonomy, funding, and the proliferation of universities without adequate resources were also raised by ASUU. The union emphasized the need for urgent government intervention to address these systemic challenges.

In light of escalating insecurity, poverty, and unemployment nationwide, ASUU expressed deep concern about the deteriorating socio-economic conditions affecting Nigerians.

The ASUU meeting, attended by representatives from various universities, highlighted the collective resolve to address systemic issues affecting the education sector and the nation at large.
