The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced its intention to distribute seized food items across the nation in response to the prevailing economic hardships. This decision comes amid protests over the high cost of living and food items in various parts of the country.
Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, revealed the plan as part of efforts to address critical food security challenges and escalating food prices. CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, highlighted the service’s commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda and its core mandate of promoting economic stability and prosperity.
Maiwada emphasized the urgent need to ensure food availability and alleviate the adverse effects of scarcity on Nigerians. He outlined the NCS’s strategy to directly distribute seized food items forfeited to the Federal Government, ensuring they are certified fit for consumption by relevant agencies before equitable distribution nationwide.
“The NCS is dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s food security and enhancing the economic well-being of all Nigerians,” Maiwada stated, underscoring the commitment to transparency, fairness, and public safety in the distribution process.
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed the interception of 45 trucks smuggling maize to neighbouring countries, emphasizing the government’s efforts to combat illegal activities impacting food prices domestically. Shettima urged Nigerians to unite against those undermining the government’s initiatives.

This is good news, distributing these will help eleviate hunger even if it’s very minimal
