Federal Government Initiates Payment of Withheld ASUU Salaries

In a significant development, the Federal Government has commenced the disbursement of withheld salaries owed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), according to reliable sources.
Multiple sources within the academic sector, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the commencement of salary payments to ASUU members. Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, Chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, corroborated this, stating, “Yes, it is true. Payment has started rolling in.”
The decision to release the withheld salaries follows President Bola Tinubu’s approval in October 2023, wherein four out of the eight months’ salaries withheld were authorized for payment. These salaries had been withheld during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who implemented a ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ during an eight-month strike by university-based unions in 2022.
Moreover, Minister of Education Tahir Mamman recently announced a 35% increase in salaries for university workers. Additionally, the government has granted autonomy to universities by exempting them from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), allowing them to independently manage recruitment and fill vacancies without requiring waivers.
These decisions were reached following informal consultations with tertiary institution unions, indicating a positive step towards resolving long-standing grievances within the academic sector.
