Sexagenarian Rescued and Hospitalized After Being Trapped in Lagos Well

A 63-year-old man, Akin Kuboye, is receiving treatment in the hospital after being rescued from a 120-meter-deep well in the Igando area of Lagos State on Sunday.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday. She explained that Kuboye, a plumber, had been carrying out repair work inside the well when he became trapped, raising alarm among local residents.

In response to the distress call, LSFRS operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene and successfully carried out the rescue.

“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to a life-threatening distress call at 09:54 hours on Sunday at 20, Muyibi Adebayo Street, off Agric Road, Egan – Igando, Lagos,” Adeseye said.

“Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a 63-year-old man, Akin Kuboye, got trapped while working in a 120-meter deep well located at the rear of a bungalow building. The property covers an area of about 648 square meters and consists of 14 rooms of varying sizes.”

Adeseye also noted that the Ejigbo Rescue Crew successfully rescued Kuboye from the well. After being freed, he was handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service team, who provided medical assistance for ammonia gas inhalation before transporting him to the hospital for further care.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, shared additional details, confirming that Kuboye suffered minor injuries during the incident.

“Upon arrival of LASEMA’s Dolphin Response Team, it was discovered that the victim, a plumber, was working on a pipe in the well when he slipped and fell,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

LASEMA’s team also assisted in the rescue operation.
