Kanu Urges NFF to Appoint Eguavoen as Permanent Super Eagles Coach

Former Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu has expressed strong support for Augustine Eguavoen to be appointed as the permanent coach of the Super Eagles. Speaking on Brila FM, Kanu emphasized that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) should make a swift decision and not delay the process, given Eguavoen’s solid performance and the results he has achieved.
Kanu remarked, “What are the NFF waiting for? They have to do it (give him the job permanently); he’s doing well, and he is getting the results.”
This comes as news surfaced about the NFF’s ongoing discussions with several Nigerian business moguls, including Aliko Dangote, MTN, and Baba Ijebu, regarding funding for a foreign coach. NFF president Ibrahim Gusau, in a recent budget defense before the House Committee on Sports, confirmed that the issue of financing a foreign coach remains a challenge. He noted that talks are underway with sponsors to resolve the payment issues, following the 18-month salary debt owed to former coach Jose Peseiro, which was only cleared by the President Tinubu-led government earlier this year.
Despite these discussions, Gusau acknowledged Eguavoen’s good performance, affirming that if a foreign coach is to be hired, financial matters must first be settled.
