A Russian engineer has been sentenced to 16 years for high treason after being convicted of sharing military secrets with Ukraine.
The Sverdlovsk regional court announced Tuesday that Daniel Mukhametov, a 32-year-old engineer at Uralvagonzavod, one of the world’s largest tank manufacturers, was found guilty of providing classified military and technical information to Ukrainian intelligence services.
Mukhametov, who worked at the Nizhny Tagil-based tank plant in Russia’s Urals, was detained alongside his wife Viktoria by Russia’s FSB security services in 2023. The court reported that Mukhametov “partially admitted his guilt.” His wife, Viktoria Mukhametova, received a 12.5-year sentence in early October on related charges.
This case is one of several recent espionage cases in Russia linked to the Ukraine conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. Thousands have since faced detention or fines over their opposition to the war.
