Federal Committee Blames Athletics Officials for Favour Ofili’s Exclusion from Paris Olympics

Written by on November 5, 2024

A Federal Government investigative committee has attributed the exclusion of Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili from the Paris Olympics women’s 100-meter race to negligence by officials at the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).

The committee’s report named both the AFN and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), citing that AFN Secretary General Rita Mosindi failed to communicate Ofili’s event status “reliably and timely,” while AFN Technical Director Samuel Onikeku showed “poor judgment” by ignoring a hint about her non-registration.

The report recommended disciplinary action against these officials and suggested an N8 million compensation to Ofili for the emotional impact. The committee also advised cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye to formally apologize to the Nigerian Cycling Federation for her social media post claiming she had to borrow a bike from the German team.

The report was submitted on October 22, a day before President Tinubu dissolved the Ministry of Sports Development, transitioning its functions to the National Sports Commission under Shehu Dikko.
