Beyond the Presidential Race: Key Issues and Offices on November 5 Ballots
Written by Jerry Alomatu on November 4, 2024
On November 5, Americans will vote for much more than just the presidential seat; they’ll cast ballots for members of Congress, local officials, and decide on numerous state and local referendums addressing major issues, including abortion rights.
In addition to the presidential race, every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of Senate seats are up for grabs. Republicans currently hold a slight edge in the House, while Democrats control the Senate. Control of both chambers will influence how effectively the new administration can enact its agenda.
Key gubernatorial races will be held in 11 states, including closely watched contests in New Hampshire, North Carolina, Indiana, and Washington. State governors wield significant power over state policy on issues ranging from healthcare to education.
Following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned the federal right to abortion, voters in several states will weigh in on this contentious issue. In Nebraska, for example, two competing referendums will allow voters to either restrict abortion after 12 weeks or permit it until fetal viability. Colorado voters will decide on a ban on the trophy hunting of certain animals, while Maine will vote on changing the state flag.
Thousands of local offices are also up for election, from judges to city council members. These officials impact everyday issues, such as law enforcement and community safety, making local races essential to watch this election season.
