In the early hours of Tuesday, the Wayam community in Sabon-Gari District, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, was violently attacked by a group of bandits, leaving at least 10 dead, including women and children. The attack occurred as residents were preparing for farm activities.
Eyewitnesses reported that over 50 bandits, arriving on motorcycles, unleashed terror by firing indiscriminately. Some women who resisted assault were reportedly slaughtered, while homes, shops, and barns were set ablaze.
“The bandits came into the village very early in the morning. They were riding on motorcycles in large numbers and shooting sporadically to scare the villagers,” said an anonymous source. “Some women who refused to be raped were slaughtered. They attacked us for several hours and there was no security presence throughout the time.”
Another community member, who also requested anonymity, added, “The community has been deserted by residents fearing for their lives. No security personnel have come here. When they finished the attack, the bandits retreated to the Birnin Gwari axis of Kaduna State which borders the Wayam community.”
Six months ago, a similar attack on the nearby Madaka community resulted in over 60 casualties.
Niger State Police Command spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun stated, “I will find out and get back to you,” but had not responded further at the time of publication.
