Written by on November 4, 2024

Ikorodu City FC handed Rivers United their first defeat of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League season with two second-half goals by Ayomide Cole and Rivio Ayemwenre.

The Lagos-based team claimed victory in a match held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday, scoring twice within five minutes after a goalless first half. Cole netted the opener just three minutes after the restart, and Ayemwenre extended the lead soon after.

Despite Rivers United’s late attempts to score, Ikorodu City held firm to secure a clean sheet and their third win of the season. This result drops Rivers United from the top spot, which is now occupied by Remo Stars following their 1-0 win over Lobi Stars, courtesy of Michael Ibe’s 47th-minute goal.

In another thrilling encounter, Kano Pillars edged out Plateau United 2-1 at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. Gafar Saka put Plateau United in the lead in the 66th minute, but a free-kick from Rabiu Ali equalized for the home side.

Veteran Ahmed Musa clinched victory for Kano Pillars with a stoppage-time goal, propelling the team to eighth in the league standings with 14 points.

Elsewhere, Heartland FC continued their winning streak, beating Abia Warriors 2-0 under the leadership of coach Emmanuel Amuneke. El Kanemi Warriors remain the only unbeaten side in the NPFL, preserving their record with a 1-0 win over Katsina United, thanks to a decisive 69th-minute goal by Ibrahim Mustapha. This win places them fourth on the league table.

In other results, Akwa United, Enugu Rangers, Niger Tornadoes, and Bendel Insurance all secured victories over Kwara United, Nasarawa United, Shooting Stars, and Sunshine Stars, respectively. Meanwhile, Bayelsa United and Enyimba ended in a 1-1 draw.
