The Sokoto State House of Assembly has approved the ongoing provision of subsidized food and other essential commodities for residents. This decision was reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, which noted that the assembly also plans to commend Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his proactive measures to alleviate the hardships faced by the populace.
Recently, the state government procured and distributed food items at subsidized rates to help residents cope with rising living costs. The assembly’s endorsement came during a plenary session on Thursday, following a motion of urgent public importance presented by Alhaji Abubakar Shehu (APC-Yabo) and seconded by Shehu Aliyu (APC-Wurno).
Shehu emphasized that the motion stemmed from the governor’s commitment to easing the suffering of citizens amidst economic challenges. “ our nation is currently grappling with economic challenges, making it difficult for ordinary citizens to meet their daily needs,” he stated, pointing out that many vulnerable individuals struggle to afford basic necessities.
He detailed that the government has made assorted rice available at subsidized rates across the state’s 244 wards and 23 Local Government Areas, reinforcing the administration’s dedication to mitigating economic hardships.
At the first phase of the initiative, each ward received 600 bags of 50kg rice at a subsidized price of N38,700, significantly lower than the market rate of N65,000 to N70,000. Other subsidized food options include 25kg bags at N19,500 (instead of N35,000) and 10kg bags at N7,740 (instead of N14,000). Shehu noted that this effort will greatly benefit residents, stabilize market prices, and ensure food affordability.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Tukur Bala, conducted a voice vote, and the motion received unanimous approval from the members.
In a related matter, the assembly also adopted a motion to rehabilitate livestock water pools in the Mayankan Rogo, Agge, and Na Gwamja communities in Goronyo LGA.
This motion, proposed by Alhaji Nasiru Adamu (PDP-Goronyo) and seconded by Alhaji Abdullahi Zakari (APC-Rabah), highlighted the significance of the water pools in enhancing socio-economic activities within the affected areas. Adamu reiterated that these initiatives align with the administration’s commitment to improving the living standards of Sokoto residents.
