Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, through its Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, hosted a community outreach event on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at Imota Community Grammar School.
The programme, themed Career Exploration: Understanding Your Options, was aimed at enlightening secondary school students on various career paths. This event followed closely after a recent community service initiative by the university’s Centre for AI and Robotics.
The programme commenced with an opening prayer, followed by a welcome address from Dr. O.A. Folorunsho, a representative of Caleb University. In her address, she highlighted the importance of career exploration, explaining that her motivation stemmed from an encounter with an SS2 student who was confused about her career choices.
Dr. Folorunsho expressed her commitment to guiding young students in making informed career decisions, a vision she eagerly embraced when Caleb University offered the opportunity.
The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Idowu Adegbemile, Director and Head of School Administration, Lagos State Education District, who encouraged the students to seize such opportunities to avoid making uninformed career decisions. He emphasized the significance of early planning and advised the students to be proactive about their future.
The event featured several insightful presentations. Mr. Oluwagbenga Agboola discussed exploring careers in law, governance, public policy, and public service roles, emphasizing ethical challenges in public service and the qualifications necessary to succeed as a lawyer.
Dr. E.A. Ademola, Mr. Olajide Adegunwa, and Ms. Aboyeji focused on careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Their session was engaging and informative, providing students with an opportunity to ask questions and broaden their understanding of STEM fields.
Dr. Felicia Adeyemo spoke on opportunities in entrepreneurship, encouraging students to consider it as a viable career option.
Arc. Opeyemi Asaju emphasized time management in building a successful career, advising students on the importance of prioritizing, planning, pacing themselves, and persisting, while stressing the value of working smart over working hard.
Ms. Opeyemi Shokoya highlighted career opportunities in arts, social sciences, media, communication, and management, offering guidance on subject combinations for JAMB and WAEC exams.
Dr. Aregban Isibor provided insights into career paths in accounting, finance, management, and business administration.
The Principal of Imota Community Grammar School, Mrs. Olulobo Emily Abolade, expressed her satisfaction with the event. In an interview with Shiloh Media, she described it as “an impressive and satisfactory event.” Mrs. Abolade pledged to follow up with teachers and students to ensure the continuity of such impactful programmes in the school.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks, gift presentations, and a photo session. It was a successful initiative that provided valuable guidance and opened the eyes of many students to a wide range of career possibilities, equipping them to make informed decisions about their future.
