Tuchel Must Win 2026 World Cup, Says Shearer

Thomas Tuchel, recently appointed as England’s new manager, has been urged to win the 2026 World Cup to justify his role, according to former England captain Alan Shearer. The Three Lions have not lifted a major trophy since their 1966 World Cup victory, though they came close several times under former coach Gareth Southgate.
Southgate, who resigned after England’s Euro 2024 final loss to Spain, also led the team to the Euro 2020 final and the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup. Tuchel, appointed as the third foreign manager of the English men’s side, will take over on January 1, 2025, inheriting a talented squad that includes Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham.
Shearer commented on Tuchel’s appointment, saying, “We need a trophy — it’s as simple as that. We need a manager who can deliver that. There’s no doubt (Tuchel) has an incredible CV, but this is going to be a very different test for him. It’s a bold move from the FA.”
Despite the anticipation around Tuchel, the decision not to hire an English coach sparked some criticism. Interim coach Lee Carsley will continue to lead the team in upcoming Nations League matches before Tuchel’s tenure begins. Former striker Gary Lineker said, “I would have given the job to Carsley… he’s imaginative enough to produce something that is a joy to watch.”
Former England defender Micah Richards echoed a pragmatic view, stating, “The point is we don’t have an English candidate strong enough to take that job. I think Tuchel is an outstanding manager, a proven winner.”
