The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced that 899,000 doses of the Mpox vaccine have been allocated to nine African countries, including Nigeria, as part of efforts to manage the current surge.
This move is supported by key partners like Gavi, UNICEF, and WHO to ensure effective and equitable use of limited supplies.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the epicenter of the outbreak, will receive 85% of the allocation, having reported the majority of confirmed cases in Africa.
Vaccine contributions come from nations and organizations, including the EU, the U.S., Canada, and Japan. Over 5.85 million doses are expected to be available by the end of 2024.
The statement emphasized that vaccination is essential for reducing transmission and is part of a broader response strategy involving testing, clinical care, and community engagement.
