West Ham to Part Ways with Moyes at Season’s Close

Written by on May 7, 2024

West Ham manager David Moyes is set to leave the club “by mutual consent” at the end of the current season, the Premier League side announced on Monday.

In a statement, the club confirmed Moyes’s impending departure, citing mutual agreement for his exit when his contract expires at the end of the 2023/24 season. Moyes, currently in his second spell as West Ham manager, faced mounting pressure throughout the campaign, exacerbated by a string of disappointing results, including the recent loss to Chelsea and a previous 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Despite leading West Ham to the Europa Conference League title last season, Moyes’s tenure has been under scrutiny, with fans criticizing his tactics and the team’s performance. The club currently sits ninth in the Premier League table, 18 points adrift of the top four.

Reflecting on his time at West Ham, Moyes expressed pride in the progress made during his tenure, including achieving three consecutive seasons in Europe and winning the Europa Conference League title. Moyes thanked the players for their support and success over the past four-and-a-half years.

West Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan praised Moyes for his contribution to the club’s progress and success, describing him as an “absolute professional.” The announcement of Moyes’s departure allows for a fitting send-off from West Ham supporters at the club’s final home fixture of the season against Luton Town.

Amid Moyes’s impending exit, former Real Madrid, Wolves, and Spain manager Julen Lopetegui has been linked with the managerial position at West Ham. Lopetegui, who guided Wolves to Premier League safety last season, could be poised to succeed Moyes at the London Stadium.
