VP Shettima: Sultan of Sokoto Is an Institution That Must Be Protected

Written by on June 24, 2024

Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the significance of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, describing him as an institution that warrants vigilant protection and safeguarding.

This statement follows concerns raised by Prof. Isiaq Akintola, the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC), regarding alleged plans by the Sokoto government to depose the Sultan. Akintola highlighted that any attempt to unseat the Sultan would be vehemently opposed by Nigerian Muslims, especially after Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu recently removed 15 traditional rulers for various offences.

At the North West Peace & Security Summit in Katsina State, Shettima addressed the Sokoto government, stressing that the Sultan embodies more than just a monarchical role; he symbolizes a vital idea and institution.

“In all developmental issues in this country, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, I want to use him as a point of reference to recognize and appreciate all our royal fathers present here,” Shettima stated. He further directed a message to the Deputy Governor of Sokoto, asserting, “Yes, the Sultan is the Sultan of Sokoto, but he is much more than that; he represents an idea, he is an Institution that all of us in this country need to jealousy guard, protect, promote, preserve, and project for the growth of our nation.”
