Uruguay and Liverpool footballer Darwin Núñez was embroiled in a confrontation with spectators following Uruguay’s loss to Colombia in the Copa America semi-final on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, shortly after the final whistle.
Witnesses reported that Núñez climbed over railings and entered the stands, where he engaged with Colombia fans amidst chaotic scenes near the area reserved for Uruguay team supporters. Video footage captured the striker in the midst of the altercation, with other Uruguay players also reportedly involved in attempting to calm the situation.
Uruguay captain José María Giménez later addressed the incident, explaining that players intervened to protect their families amid what he described as disorder caused by a few individuals under the influence. Following the altercation, Núñez was observed embracing his son on the pitch.
Conmebol, the governing body for South American football, strongly condemned the incident, vowing to launch an investigation. The organization emphasized its commitment to maintaining respect and safety both on and off the field.
Núñez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in 2022, has scored 20 goals in 65 appearances for the club. Colombia will now face Argentina in the Copa America final on Monday.
