Security forces in Enugu State have neutralized four gunmen suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), following a successful operation early Wednesday morning.

The gunmen were reportedly preparing for an attack in the Eha Alumona area of Nsukka Local Government Area when security operatives intercepted them.

A statement from Governor Peter Mbah’s media office confirmed that the operation, carried out by the Nigerian Army, Police, and State Security Services, resulted in the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition from the gunmen.

“Some of the gunmen fled into the bush with gunshot injuries,” the statement revealed.

In addition, an ESN commander, who had been on the run and operating from neighboring states, was arrested after a fierce exchange of gunfire with the security forces.

“The commander led the security operatives to their hideouts, where they found stashed arms, charms, and other dangerous objects,” the statement further noted.

Two security officers were injured in the clash but are in stable condition and receiving treatment.

This operation is part of Governor Peter Mbah’s ongoing efforts to combat criminal elements in the state. The Governor has made significant investments in security infrastructure, including the establishment of the Distress Response Squad and a Command and Control Centre, alongside the deployment of modern surveillance technologies to track and counter threats.
