Tobi Amusan Cleared for Paris Olympics After Doping Appeal Dismissal

Written by on June 29, 2024

Tobi Amusan, Nigeria’s 100m hurdles world record holder, has been granted clearance to compete in the upcoming Paris Olympics following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to dismiss appeals against her earlier acquittal on doping charges.

The 27-year-old athlete had faced allegations of missing three anti-doping tests within a year, prompting World Athletics and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to challenge her clearance by the Disciplinary Tribunal. However, CAS affirmed that while Amusan had committed two filing failures, there was insufficient evidence to prove a third missed test, crucial for a doping offense under World Athletics’ rules.

Amusan, who set a world record of 12.12 seconds in the 100m hurdles at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, secured her place in Paris after overcoming the doping dispute. She previously placed sixth in the world championships held in Budapest last year.

World Athletics regulations stipulate that athletes failing to report their whereabouts for doping tests three times in a year face a two-year ban from competition, underscoring the significance of CAS’s decision in clearing Amusan to compete on the Olympic stage.
