Tobi Amusan, the world record holder, has emerged as the fastest woman in the women’s 100m hurdles this year, clocking a remarkable 12.40 seconds to clinch victory at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational held in Kingston. She outpaced Jamaican and world champion, Danielle Williams, in an electrifying race.
Initially trailing behind reigning world champion Williams and America’s Nia Ali, Amusan showcased her exceptional speed in the final stretch, surging ahead to secure the win. Her performance shattered the previous world-leading time of 12.42 seconds set by Tonea Marshall of the USA in April.
Williams finished closely behind in second place, clocking 12.46 seconds, while Christina Clemens of the USA claimed third position with a time of 12.54 seconds.
Yanique Thompson, another Jamaican athlete, secured fourth place with a time of 12.59 seconds, while Ali slipped to fifth position, crossing the finish line in 12.65 seconds.
Amusan’s decision to participate in the Jamaica Invitational saw her skipping the Doha Diamond League, alongside other prominent athletes. Despite missing out on that event, Amusan’s performance underscores her exceptional form and determination to excel in international competitions.
The Nigerian athlete concluded the previous season on a high note by clinching victory at the Diamond League in Eugene, Oregon, for the third consecutive time. Her outstanding achievement silenced critics who had raised concerns following her fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where she lost the title to Williams.
