Written by on July 12, 2024

President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts. This decision was conveyed in a letter personally signed by Tinubu to mark the 90th birthday of Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka.

“I am pleased to join admirers around the world in celebrating the 90th birthday of Nigeria’s iconic son and the world-renowned Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde, famously known as Wole Soyinka,” Tinubu stated.

He highlighted Soyinka’s global impact as the first African Nobel Literature Prize winner in 1986 and praised his resilience in overcoming challenges, including prostate cancer. Tinubu emphasized Soyinka’s contributions as a playwright, actor, poet, human rights activist, and political advocate.

Describing Soyinka as a “colossus” and a “true Renaissance person,” Tinubu underscored the importance of celebrating Soyinka’s achievements while he is still with us. He commended Soyinka’s efforts in advocating for justice and equity, both nationally and internationally.

Tinubu recalled their shared history in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, particularly during the June 12 crisis, highlighting Soyinka’s courage and influence in mobilizing opposition against military dictatorship.

“I wish Professor Soyinka an incredibly happy 90th birthday,” Tinubu concluded, recognizing Soyinka’s enduring influence on literature, activism, and his role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey.
