Tension Rise Ahead of August 1 Protest

Written by on July 29, 2024

With only four days remaining until the nationwide protest against economic hardship on August 1, both the police and organizers remain at an impasse over the legality and logistics of the demonstration. The police have requested details from organizers to ensure a peaceful protest, a demand Deji Adeyanju, one of the protest organizers, claims infringes on constitutional rights.

Human rights activist Ebun Adegboruwa has accused telecom companies of attempting to hinder the protest through arbitrary disconnections, though the companies deny these claims.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged caution from both the protesters and the government, suggesting alternative methods of grievance expression. Meanwhile, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, supports the protest, attributing it to widespread hunger and hopelessness.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) and political figures like Salihu Lukman and Prof. Pat Utomi have criticized attempts to criminalize or obstruct the protest. The Afenifere faction, led by Reuben Fasoranti, has rejected the protest, labeling it as politically motivated, while the Lagos Indigenous Youths Network warns against any violent actions during the protest.
