Super Falcons Fall to Brazil in Olympics Opener
Written by Jerry Alomatu on July 26, 2024
The Super Falcons’ return to the Olympics after a 16-year absence saw them lose 1-0 to Brazil in their opening match of the Paris 2024 Games.
The decisive moment of the match came in the first half when Gabriela Nunes Da Silva scored the only goal with a powerful strike.
Despite a positive start from Randy Waldrum’s team, including a missed opportunity by Chiwendu Ihezuo, Nigeria struggled to maintain their attacking momentum. Rasheedat Ajibade, Nigeria’s standout player, created the best chance by beating her marker and crossing to Ihezuo, whose header was saved by the Brazilian goalkeeper.
The Super Falcons’ missed chances allowed Brazil to take control of the match, extending their unbeaten run against Nigeria to four matches.
This defeat places Nigeria in a challenging position in Group C, which also includes reigning world champions Spain and Asian powerhouse Japan. The loss echoes their previous Olympic meeting in Beijing 2008, marking another tough start for the Super Falcons in Olympic competition.
